And the winner is... The Tower Project results


Fours teams presented towers and completed a "Failure" test. Three teams made it through five levels of testing. Only one tower met the testing requirements of 2 pounds.

Congratulations to the all the presenters. Special congratulations to Alex Vann and the Blue team.

Failure Anaylsis-Build, test and evaluate a tower. Part 1
















The students completed research on tall structures and made individual designs for a prototype. Then, as a team, they selected a final design and submitted a supply request for "purchased materials".

Project: Lemonade

HW: You are an "Industrial Engineer".
Your client wants to sell 16 oz glasses of homemade lemonade. You have been hired to create the product.
1. Use the Design Process graphic organizer to create an outline for the project.
2. Complete the project based on the outline.
3. Write a summary of the activity, especially challenges and resolutions.
4. The outline and summary are due on Monday, October 20, 2008.

Field Trip: Chicago Center for Green Technology 9/18/08







The students completed a tour of the facility and the grounds. These pictures were taken on the roof. The roof has solar panels that generate heat for the building. A portion of the roof is covered with sedum. (See the students comments for more information.)

Beam Strength





Students load tested the strength of beams made from varying amounts of spaghetti. The documented and discussed their results.

Foil Boats

Each team designed four boats out of foil. Then they load tested each, recorded the data, and chose their best design.

The students took several measurements of the hallway stairs in order to estimate the angle of elevation of the stairwell.

Day 1 "Book covers"


On the first day of class the students learned an "old school" method of covering books, following a set of directions. None of these students had ever done this before!
This was follwed by a discussion on innovation and why we love today's stretchy book covers.
